CHANDIGARH: State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) celebrated Nation Legal Day in association with Peace Club and Dev Samaj College of Education, Yuvsatta- and NGO under the guidance of Ms Justice Ritu Bahri, executive chairman, SLSA, Chandigarh here on Wednesday. The Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 was enacted to provide free, effective and competent legal services to the weaker and marginalized sections of the society and said Act came into force on November 9, 1995. Therefore, 9th November is celebrated as National Legal Serices Day every year.
A Pink Turban Campaign and Human Chain was organized at Dev Samaj College, Sector-36, Chandigarh on the occasion of Ntional Legal Services Day. The students of Dev Samaj College of Education and Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School participated in the said programme. Mr. Surender Kumar, Additional District and Sessions Judge cum Member Secretary, SLSA. Chandigarh, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He told the gathering about the significance of the gender equality, rights of girls, provisions of POCSO Act etc..
The Chief Guest while addressing the young girl participants said that it was a time for girls and women to raise their voices against discrimination in respect of education, healthcare, equality and human rights. Until and unless they fel t empowered from inside and take a stand to claim their due rights, one can’t expect any drastic change in their position in society.Later all 200 participants of the initiative formed a HUMAN CHAIN to give a strong message of their voices for a gender equal world.
An interactive session with the students of Government College of Education , Sector 20D, Chandigarh was conducted in which Mr Kumar told the gathering about the significance and the importance of the National legal Services Day. He dealt with all the provisions w.r.t. Rights of the Accused Persons, POCSO Act, D.V. Act and entitlements of the free legal Servvices in Chandigarh. The session ended with the queries from the students. The Programme was attende by Dr Atul Kumar Srivastava, Principal, Dr Meena Incharge Legal Cell and Dr Lilu Ram, Cooridnator of the College and Mr.Rajeshwar Singh, Law Officer, SLSA
